Van Dijk in contract talks with Liverpool
Van Dijk in contract talks with Liverpool. Dutch defender and Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk has confirmed he’s in talks with the Merseyside club over a fresh contract.
The Dutch man has been with the club since 2018 and his current contract is set to expire at the end of the season.
There has however been uncertainty over his future at Anfield, but the Dutch international has reiterated that his focus at the moment is on the football season with the club.
Speaking with BBC Sport, Van Dijk said;
“Discussions are ongoing, we will see what happens in the future.
“My full focus is on Liverpool, wanting to win games that are ahead of me and nothing else.
“What the future will bring I have no idea at the moment. I can only tell you that discussions have started and we will see.”
The 33-year-old also stated that he is in good condition healthwise and is enjoying his time with the Reds.
“I feel good, physically, mentally and I am having fun,” he added.
“When it’s time to make a decision, you guys [the media] will know it as well.”
He also gave credits to his team following their strong start to the Premier League this season.
“I wouldn’t say it’s [just] the last line and the goalkeepers making a difference, it’s the guys in front of us, it’s a team effort,” he explained.
“Me and Ibou [Konate] as the centre-backs, or the goalkeepers, will get the credit for the clean sheets but it’s about everyone in the team and credit to everyone who is doing that.”
Liverpool have been flying this season with seven wins from their first eight league games which sees them on top of the Premier League table.
Virgil Van Djik has also been instrumental this season for Liverpool, with the Reds conceding just three league goals so far this season, which is the best defensive record in the league so far.
Not just Van Dijk, but also Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah will be out of contract next summer and no new contract talks has emerged so far.
