UEFA Launch David Coote investigation with PGMOL
UEFA Launch David Coote investigation with PGMOL. UEFA have launched an investigation into Premier League referee David Coote, following the emergence of a new video on social media.
Before the publication of the video, Coote had already been suspended by refereeing body Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), pending a full investigation into a separate video which appeared to show the referee using foul-words to describe Liverpool and their former manager, Jurgen Klopp.
The new video, which is also unverified with regard to the subject’s identity, was posted by national newspaper The Sun on Wednesday, prompting UEFA to launch an investigation.
A statement released on Thursday, read:
“A UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to evaluate a potential violation of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations by the referee, Mr. David Coote.
“Further information regarding this matter will be made available in due course.”
In a widely reported statement on Wednesday, PGMOL acknowledged the emergence of the new video, adding that they are taking the “allegations” against Coote “very seriously”.
The Premier League official had already been placed under an independent investigation by the Football Association (FA), following the original video which emerged on social media on Monday.
The video showed a man allegedly Coote, berating Liverpool and Klopp, describing the German boss as “arrogant” and a “C**t.
Darren Lewis of The Mirror reported later on Monday that Coote had accepted the viral video in which he appears on to be genuine, but it is believed he does not recall the content of the discussion, as it was recorded several years ago.
PGMOL said on Monday they will be “making no further comment” until the investigation is complete.
Coote a Premier League official since 2018, took charge of Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday.
The official, who refereed the 2023 Carabao Cup final between Manchester United and Newcastle United, has also been a lead VAR, and was appointed to Euro 2024.
