Pep Guardiola blames self for disastrous Man City run. Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has brutally admitted to not being “good enough” to bring the Cityzens out of their current crisis following a shock late defeat to local rivals Manchester United.
City have lost eight of their last 11 games across all competitions, almost twice as many times as they were beaten (10) in the whole of 2023/24 campaign.
Things looked promising for the reigning Premier League champions in the derby when Josko Gvardiol headed them into a first half lead. But United were the better team in the second half and turned the game around with late goals from Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo.
City have now taken only four points from the last 15 on offer in the Premier League alone, to see their challenge for a historic fifth straight title all but go up in smoke.
Speaking after the derby defeat, Guardiola bluntly conceded after the latest defeat, shouldering the blame personally.
“I’m the boss, I’m the manager, I have to find solutions but I don’t find solutions,”
“This is a big club and when you lose eight [out of 11 games] something is wrong. You can say the schedule is tough or the injuries to players, but no. I’m the manager and I’m not good enough, simple as that. I have to find a way to talk to them, to train them in the way we need to play, to press the way we need to press. I’m not good enough. I’m not doing well. That is the truth.”
City have fallen to fifth place in the Premier League table, a point behind surprise package Nottingham Forest.
They sit seven points behind Chelsea in second place, and nine off the pace being set by leaders Liverpool, who also do have a game in hand.
Recall that Guardiola recently signed a new contract extension with City in late November, which runs until 2027.
