Luka Modric breaks famous Real Madrid record
Luka Modric breaks famous Real Madrid record. Luka Modric became the oldest player in history to feature for Real Madrid when he came off the bench during their 2-1 win over Celta Vigo on Saturday.
The veteran midfielder was introduced shortly after the hour mark and needed just three minutes to make an impact, setting up what proved to be the winning goal for Vinicius Junior.
At 39 years and 40 days old, Modric became the oldest player to ever represent Los Blancos, breaking the record previously held by the legendary Ferenc Puskas.
Modric will continue to break his own record over the course of the season. His contract expires in June, three months before he celebrates his 40th birthday.
Speaking of Modric after the game, Ancelotti said;
“When he starts, when he comes off the bench… he always helps us,” he said.
“He came on at a difficult moment in the match and changed the game. It’s a pleasure to coach him as a player and as a person.
“There is not much to add. He is a fantastic footballer and he still is. An extraordinary professional. A calm man, but with character. Real Madrid have been lucky to have this player.”
Reports suggest Modric will depart Madrid at the end of the season when his current contract expires, although the Croatia international remains a regular part of Carlo Ancelotti‘s starting lineup. He has already started five times in La Liga this season, following on from 18 starts last year.
