“It’s clear that this has nothing to do with sportive ambition” – Ronald Koeman on Steven Bergwijn’s move to Saudi Arabia
“It’s clear that this has nothing to do with sportive ambition” – Ronald Koeman on Steven Bergwijn’s move to Saudi Arabia.
Former Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman has slammed Steven Bergwijn’s move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq, suggesting it was driven by financial motivations rather than sporting ambition.
“Steven Bergwijn goes to Saudi Arabia at age 26. It’s clear that this has nothing to do with sportive ambition,” Koeman stated. “His book with the Dutch National Team is closed. He probably knows what I would have said this.”
The 26-year-old winger, who previously played for Tottenham Hotspur and Ajax, joined the Saudi Pro League side this summer, adding to a growing list of European players seeking lucrative contracts in the Middle East.
Koeman’s comments suggest a clear disapproval of Bergwijn’s decision, highlighting a lack of ambition and potentially affecting his future with the Netherlands national team.
The move has sparked debate amongst football fans, with some questioning the long-term implications of players choosing financial security over sporting aspirations.
