BREAKING: Manchester City’s Rodri set to miss remainder of the season with ACL injury
BREAKING: Manchester City’s Rodri set to miss remainder of the season with ACL injury. Manchester City‘s midfielder Rodrigo Hernandez is set to miss the remainder of the season, after suffering an ACL tear during the 2-2 draw with Arsenal, reports have stated.
Rodri, who has spoken openly about the physical toll of his side’s hectic schedule, and even teased the idea of players going on strike to force a change, was forced off the pitch just 20 minutes into the game, after falling to the ground from a Thomas Partey challenge.
As first revealed by MARCA, Rodri underwent tests in Manchester, which indicated a torn cruciate ligament in his right knee.
According to reports, the midfielder is believed to be travelling to Madrid for further checks before a final, formal diagnosis. But ESPN states an ACL injury has already been confirmed.
Such an injury will likely sideline Rodri for the entirety of the 2024/25 campaign, an enormous blow to City’s push to defend their league title, while still challenging for other trophies.
Rodri has since established himself as one of Pep Guardiola‘s crucial player since joining Man City from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2019, for a then club record fee of £62.8million (€75.3m).
The midfielders absence will surely be felt by the Cityzens who do not have a natural alternative to sit at the base of their midfield.
Rodri is also among the leading contenders to win this season’s Ballon d’Or award, after a stellar year with club and country.
Pep Guardiola introduced Mateo Kovacic to replace the injured Rodri against Arsenal, while the likes of Ilkay Gundogan, Rico Lewis and even centre-back John Stones could all see significant minutes at the base of City’s midfield this season.
