Andriy Lunin makes surprise Real Madrid contract decision
Andriy Lunin makes surprise Real Madrid contract decision. Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, has agreed a new long-term contract with the Spanish side, reports have revealed.
Lunin has entered the final 12 months of his existing deal and had been expected to depart on a free transfer next summer in search of regular first-team football, having spent the last four years deputising for Thibaut Courtois.
When the Belgian went down injured last summer, Lunin fought off competition from loanee Kepa Arrizabalaga to make 31 appearances in all competitions, only to be dropped for the Champions League final when Courtois returned.
An exit from the club this summer failed to materialise but, rather than allow his contract to expire, it is been reported that the goalkeeper has now agreed a new four-year deal.
According to popular Italian football transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Ukrainian goalkeeper agreed a new deal with the Los Blancos till the summer of 2028.
Lunin had put renewal negotiations on hold during the summer amid concerns over his long-term role in the squad but appears to have been convinced to stay and continue battling with Courtois, who has started every game so far this season.
It is noted that Lunin could still depart the club in 2025 if a suitable offer arrives, but for now, the Ukrainian is focused on adding to his 48 appearances for the club.
News of Lunin’s extension could have a significant impact on Chelsea, who welcomed Kepa back this summer after his loan expired.
Kepa wanted to return to Madrid this summer and the Spanish side were happy to try strike a deal if Lunin left. When no offer arrived, Kepa signed a new one-year contract and joined Bournemouth on loan for the remainder of the season.
