Aitana Bonmati wins The Best FIFA Women’s Player 2024. Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmati has picked up The award for The Best FIFA Women’s Player of the year for the second year running, after an inspirational 12 months.
The Barcelona midfielder has long been the leading figure in women’s football and has now completed a double of The Best FIFA Women’s Player award and Ballon d’Or Feminin. She secured the latter for the second time running also back in October following a landslide victory.
Bonmati enjoyed a special year with Barcelona, claiming the quadruple after winning the Champions League, Copa de la Reina, Supercopa de Espana and Liga F. The Spaniard also won the 2023/24 UEFA Nations League with her country, scoring in the final during a 2-0 win over France.
The 26-year-old scored 26 goals and laid on 20 assists for club and country across 2023/24 and she has continued her mightily impressive form in 2024/25 with seven goals and five assists thus far.
Bonmati scored the crucial opener in the 2023/24 Champions League final, too. Her strike in the 63rd minute helped Barcelona to their 2-0 victory over Lyon as they retained their status as European champions for another year.
The Best FIFA Women’s Player award has been distributed since 2016 and has been won by seven different players, including Bonmati. Prior to her first triumph in 2023, Barcelona teammate Alexia Putellas had claimed the prize twice on the spin.
There were 16 nominees in total for the accolade and Bonmati fought off competition from a number of her club and international teammates.
Caroline Graham Hansen, Keira Walsh, Ona Batlle and Salma Paralluelo are among the current Barcelona players who were nominated, while Chelsea’s Lucy Bronze and Arsenal’s Mariona Caldentey both represented the Catalan giants in 2023/24 before summer exits.
